Webb City High School sophomore Skye Lofland is already a steady presence on the varsity volleyball court, but she points to the people around her as the source of her drive and composure.
“My family and friends inspire me because they always push me to be my best,” Lofland said. “But I would specifically say my dad. He encourages me, challenges me, and believes in me. I admire how hard he works and how much he cares not only for our family but for everyone around him.”
Now in 10th grade, Lofland said she balances her love for volleyball with a genuine enjoyment of school, especially math. Her favorite teacher is a throwback to elementary school — “my favorite teacher is Mrs. Zwahlen from 5th grade,” she said — reflecting how long-lasting some of her influences have been.
On the court, Lofland values the chemistry of a team more than any single role. “We have great setters, and each one brings something special to the team,” she said. What she enjoys most is the bond that forms over long practices and high-pressure matches. “I enjoy creating stronger relationships with my teammates and competing together,” she said.
Many of those teammates are also her closest friends. “I love how my team always supports each other, pushes each other to be better, and makes every moment fun,” Lofland said. “We celebrate each other’s successes, lift each other up after tough plays, and genuinely care about one another. Being surrounded by teammates who work hard, encourage each other, and create such a positive environment is one of my favorite parts of being on this team. Sharing the court with some of my best friends makes the experience even more meaningful.”
Athletics, she said, has already shaped how she approaches life beyond the gym. “Athletics has taught me to work hard, staying disciplined, and being a reliable teammate,” Lofland said. “Sports have also taught me to never give up and to keep working hard and have a positive attitude no matter the situation. These lessons have already helped me and will continue to help me in school, my future career, and everyday life.”
Off the court, she runs track, is active in school leadership and participates in the youth group at Christ’s Church of Oronogo, where she volunteers weekly in childcare and has joined several mission trips.
