Senior Jaylee VanBecelaere is one of those players who seems to be everywhere for Webb City High School’s varsity volleyball team, whether she’s serving, defending or encouraging a teammate after a long rally. A 12th grader who loves science and credits multimedia teacher Mr. Vonderharr as her favorite, VanBecelaere balances a full school schedule with a packed athletic and activity calendar.
Her inspiration, she said, starts at home. “My Grandad. He didn’t come from much, but he had big goals and worked really hard to achieve them. I hope to be like him as I grow up!” VanBecelaere said. That example of persistence shows up in how she approaches sports and leadership on the court.
VanBecelaere said the best part of volleyball is the bond built over years of playing together. “The thing I love most about my teammates is that we are not only teammates we are all friends and very close. We have seven seniors and we have played together since Junior High!” she said. She added that she “enjoy[s] all the connections you make over the seasons,” and the thrill of competition: “There is nothing better than playing against another school with all of your friends.”
She praised setters Avery Pogue and Marissa Elbert, calling them “two great setters” who “have both grown so much over the past season” and “will be great adds to the team this year.” On defense, she pointed to Chemmy Purcell as the teammate “always willing to go after a tough ball.” For serving, VanBecelaere prefers a jump serve “because I get more power and have better control over the ball.”
Athletics have given her lessons she expects to carry beyond high school. “I have definitely learned how to work hard and push through tough situations. I’ve also learned so much about communication and how important that is!” she said. She said former teammate Marlee Harper, who graduated last year, left a lasting impression with her “positive attitude” and ability to make everyone feel appreciated.
Away from volleyball, VanBecelaere stays busy in student government, Pals, High Step and track, where she competes in long and triple jump, and enjoys time with friends and family outdoors, especially at her grandparents’ house with her cousins.
