Carthage High School junior Henry Laytham has become one of the most versatile pieces in the Tigers’ track and field program, piling up points in events ranging from the high jump to multiple middle-distance races and relays. A standout in the 800 and 1,600 meters as well as the 4×400, 4×200 and 4×800 relays, Laytham embraces every opportunity to compete. “I compete in many events in track and field,” he said. “They range from high jump, 800 meter, 1600 meter, 4×400 meter, 4×200 meter, and 4×800 meter.”
Laytham said the culture around Carthage track and field is what makes the long days at the track worth it. He points to the bond among athletes and coaches as a driving force behind the team’s success. “In my opinion Carthage track is very united in what we do and support each other in the events that people do,” Laytham said. “I love how the coaches have put a great influence on team unity and also hard work.”
Away from the track, the 11th-grader leans on the example of his parents, who he said are among his greatest inspirations. Their work ethic and morals, he added, push him to be a better person daily. In the classroom, math is his favorite subject, and he especially enjoys having Mrs. Berendt as his teacher.
Laytham uses his downtime at meets to cheer on teammates and make sure they are competing at their highest level. He said athletics have taught him the value of hard work, dedication and staying steady through the inevitable ups and downs of competition. “Give your everything for something and at the end of the day you can’t be disappointed,” Laytham said.
In his free time, Laytham enjoys being with family, thrifting and playing soccer with friends. Looking ahead, he hopes to compete in track and field or soccer in college while pursuing an engineering degree. One day, he would also like to add another challenge to his track resume: learning the technique-heavy pole vault.
