Carthage’s Alizabeth (Lu) Willis – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Stephen McKay Shelter Insurance

By Mike Moguin

Being involved in sports teaches values to each individual who takes up the athletic endeavor(s) they choose.

Carthage High School junior Alizabeth Willis, known as “Lu” to her teammates, has learned hers in the game of softball.

“My sport has taught me that I will face adversity in life and how I overcome that is what matters the most,” Willis said.

The memory she is most proud “was pinch running my freshman year,” she said.

Lexa Youngblood is the teammate, Willis said, who has left the biggest impression on her.

“Because we play the same position, I’ve always looked up to her,” she said.

When donning the Tiger uniform, what Willis likes most is “showing what Carthage Softball really is and representing the sisterhood and bonds we have in each other,” she said.

Her favorite teacher throughout all her years of school is Mr. Armstrong. “I always felt understood and seen by him,” Willis said.

Besides softball, Willis is involved with Future Business Leaders of America.

The best advice she ever received, she said, is “You may not be able to adjust the wind but you can always adjust your sails.”

The person who inspires Willis the most, she said, is her father
