Q&A with Webb City’s John Roderique – Athletic Director Spotlight – Presented by Hutchinson Community College

Prep Sports recently had the chance to interview Webb City Athletic Director John Roderique to hear all about his life.

PREP SPORTS: Where did you go to high school? 

I went to Webb City High School.

PREP SPORTS: When did you graduate?

Graduated in 1986.

PREP SPORTS: What sports did you play?

Football, Basketball and Track in HS. Also played baseball growing up, but not in HS.

PREP SPORTS: Where did you start your coaching career?

I Started my coaching career at Pitt State after my playing days were over. Graduating from Pitt in 1990 and started coaching that summer/fall. 

PREP SPORTS: Coaching what sports?

I’ve mostly coached football but also was an assistant track coach for a handful of years. 

PREP SPORTS: Do you have a coaching/teaching mentor?

My HS coach was one.  Mark McDonald.  Also, Jerry Kill, Chuck Broyles, Tim Beck… all college coaches I played for and coached with.

PREP SPORTS: Someone you have looked up to for advice. Why?

Many people… Too many to list. Just depends on the situation and advice. Some of the same mentioned above… but also many others. 

PREP SPORTS: What is the message to athletes under your guidance and leadership?

Football is a great for developing young men in preparation for life.  In football you have to do “hard stuff.” So many life skills are aquired playing sports, particularly football. 

PREP SPORTS: Getting to know more about YOU on a personal level, where is your favorite place to eat dinner (Eating out)?

I’m not very picky…. Where ever my wife wants to go… I can find something to eat anywhere. LOL

PREP SPORTS: What’s your choice from the menu?

I like chicken more than steak.  Seafood and Chinese as well. 

PREP SPORTS: What are your hobbies?

I haven’t acquired many hobbies as of yet.  Doing yard work is something I enjoy. 

PREP SPORTS: What do you enjoy doing most on “Me Time?”

Hanging out with my wife, children and grandchildren. I like to play cards as well. 

PREP SPORTS: What is your favorite sports team from the college or pro ranks?

I’m a chiefs fan mostly. 

PREP SPORTS: What is your all-time favorite movie?

“All the right moves”

PREP SPORTS: What was the first music concert? 

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

PREP SPORTS: Have you ever visited a foreign country? If so, where?

Have only been out of the continental US to travel to Hawaii and Bahamas.  

PREP SPORTS: Tell me what you have come to love the most about your school, your athletes and where the athletic program is headed?

The best thing about our school is the people in the building truly care about developing kids.  Kids we have here in WC are outstanding. Great kids!

PREP SPORTS: Who gets a big shout out from YOU?

1.  All the former players and coaches that have poured into our program over the past 26 years.  

2. My wife and family, who have sacrificed for me to do what I love for a long time.

3. To all the parents that put raising their children as their #1 priority in life.
