Brecken Green has embraced the role of competitor and leader throughout his senior year at Joplin High School, carving out a reputation as a multi-sport athlete who thrives when expectations are low. A standout in both baseball and basketball, Green has helped fuel a culture built on grit, resilience, and belief in one another.
“I feel like Joplin is always counted out and is the underdog so that motivates me to be my best for my team.”
That mindset has shaped Green’s approach, pushing him to invest in offseason work and trust the process laid out by his coaches. Whether on the diamond or the hardwood, his commitment shows in his consistency and ability to rise in big moments. One of those moments came during his junior season when Joplin knocked off Nixa for a district championship.
“Beating Nixa in the district championship game last year.”
Green credits much of his growth to the people around him, especially a family member who has been there every step of the way.
“My papa is my biggest role model because he has helped me so much in my baseball journey!”
That support system extends into the classroom as well, where Green has stayed involved and focused despite a demanding schedule that includes National Honor Society, FCA, Fusion, and serving as a school ambassador.
“Mrs. Van Otterloo has had the biggest impact because she never gave up and always helped me with anything I was struggling with.”
On the field, Green enjoys the competitive edge that comes with rivalries, particularly when facing Webb, and he sharpens his skills in practice against teammates like catcher Daniel Rose, who knows how to challenge him pitch by pitch. He’s also quick to recognize the contributions of others, pointing to the junior varsity squad as a key piece of the program’s energy and success.
“It means a lot being able to play sports with Joplin on my chest and represent the community that shows so much love and support!”
For Green, success is about more than wins, it’s about representing something bigger than himself every time he competes.
