Colby McGehee has built his senior year at Neosho High School around a simple standard: work hard enough to earn the feeling of accomplishment that comes with reaching a goal.

A three-year starter and team captain for the Wildcats, McGehee brings a physical, versatile presence to the football field as both a linebacker and running back. His commitment has helped him become an All-Area and All-Conference linebacker, while his consistency in the classroom has earned him Academic All-State recognition in football and track and field for three consecutive years.

McGehee’s drive began at home. His dad and stepdad have consistently pushed him to give his best effort, shaping the work ethic he carries into every practice, workout and competition. That mindset has also been reinforced by Neosho teacher Mr. Littlefield, who has helped McGehee recognize the value of dedication while developing the confidence to become a stronger competitor.

Success has not arrived by accident. McGehee credits the long hours spent training and practicing during the offseason for preparing him to compete at a high level. His work in the weight room reflects that commitment, with a 500-pound squat and 300-pound bench press helping him develop the strength necessary to make an impact on Friday nights. He also runs a 4.9-second 40-yard dash, pairing power with the ability to move quickly in space.

One of the defining moments of McGehee’s athletic career came when he received his first college football offer from Central Methodist University. The opportunity confirmed what his offseason work had been building toward: the chance to continue playing football at the next level.

Competition is a major part of what makes football meaningful for McGehee. Beating Webb City carries special significance because of the schools’ rivalry and because he has friends on the opposing roster. Within Neosho’s own practices, he enjoys matching up against teammate Michael Schellhorn, a tough competitor who challenges him daily. Their battles sharpen both players and create the kind of environment that raises the standard for the entire team.

McGehee is also a standout in track and field. He is a three-year letterman and an AAU Junior Olympian in shot put, discus and javelin, placing among the top 35 competitors in all three events. Away from athletics, he has served as a Future Farmers of America officer for three years and won first place individually in Missouri’s state poultry judging competition.

For McGehee, representing Neosho means carrying the pride of his town into every game, meet and opportunity.
