Leading by example: Joplin’s Alexander Flinn shoulders the load as lone defensive returning starter

As Joplin High School prepares for the upcoming football season, one voice stands out on the defensive side of the ball. Senior defensive lineman Alexander Flinn returns as the lone defensive starter from a year ago, stepping into a natural leadership role for a unit that will feature plenty of new faces.

Flinn approaches the responsibility with a straightforward mindset. “I just show up every day and then mostly try to lead by example. I just want to show people what to do and help them if they need help with anything,” he said. “Everybody’s been stepping up really good, though, I think.”

That experience gap is real. Flinn knows the jump from junior varsity to varsity under the lights on Friday better than most of his teammates. Facing bigger offensive linemen and adjusting to a faster pace are lessons he carries forward. “Just playing against all the big offensive linemen for the D-line because it’s a big step up from JV,” he explained. “It’s just like a different speed from JV, going up to varsity.”

With the Eagles opening against strong competition such as Kickapoo and Nixa, Flinn’s message to the newcomers is simple and reassuring. The speed will feel quicker, he tells them, but the summer work against their own teammates and other squads has prepared them. “Just keep bringing it how they have been.”When the inevitable shell-shock moment arrives in Week 1, Flinn’s job is clear. “I want to just try to bring everybody together,” he said. “Tell them to just keep going and not let it get to them, even though it’s hard sometimes, just to push through.”

Looking at the bigger picture, Flinn wants the defense to improve steadily. “I just want to be the best team we can and hopefully we’ll keep getting better and better,” he said. “Even if we’re not great at the start, keep building on it and then just keep getting better week by week.” He has full belief in the players around him after watching their work this summer.

The senior season itself carries extra weight. Flinn is focused on helping his teammates maximize their potential and enjoy the ride. “I’m just trying to get everybody to be the best they can for the last year and just have the most fun they can.”

What he has seen so far encourages him. The team has experienced both strong moments and setbacks during the summer and early practices, yet the response has been positive. After a rough Monday and Tuesday last week, the Eagles bounced back with strong sessions the rest of the week. “I’ve seen them get back up from those (rough practices) and keep working towards being great,” Flinn said.

That resilience fuels his outlook. “Anything we put our minds to, really,” he said of the team’s potential. “I have faith in everybody.”

With the start of the season just around the corner, Flinn is ready. “I’m really excited. I can’t wait for it to start. It’s going to be a great season.”

For a defense still finding its identity, Flinn’s steady presence and quiet leadership offer a foundation. As the lone returning starter, he is not just filling a spot, he is continuing the tradition of raising the standard.
