Webb City’s Avery Pogue – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Uplink

For Webb City sophomore Avery Pogue, soccer has always been a family-backed pursuit, rooted in support and shaped by the relationships she has built on the field.

Pogue, a 10th grader for the Cardinals, said her parents are the driving force behind her growth, both as a player and as a person. “My parents inspire me,” Pogue said. “They inspire me by always being my biggest supporters and doing everything to give me what I need and more.” That foundation has helped steady her since she first laced up cleats at 5 years old and discovered a love for the game that has never really gone away.

Now in high school, Pogue said one of her favorite parts of the season is sharing the field with the same girls she grew up playing alongside. “Getting to be on the field with the girls that I have played with since I was little” is what she enjoys most about being on the team, she said. She looks up to former Webb City standout Anea Bemo, noting that Bemo left a lasting impression “as a person and a soccer player.”

On the field, Pogue admires the all-around demands of the midfield. She considers it the toughest position because it requires understanding the game, strong footwork, accurate passing and finishing, plus the endurance to play both offense and defense. It is the kind of role she has grown to appreciate by watching professionals like Trinity Rodman, her favorite player.

Away from soccer, Pogue’s favorite class is communication arts, and she credits teacher LaRee Pierce for making an impact in the classroom. In her free time, she enjoys simply being around friends and family, the same circle that has supported her since her early soccer days.

Through it all, Pogue said athletics have taught her a lesson that stretches well beyond the pitch: “to never give up even when things are hard.” That mindset continues to shape her approach as she helps carry Webb City girls’ soccer into the future.
