Reliability doesn’t just happen—it’s earned over time, and Jaeli Rutledge is proving it in every rotation. “Being as solid and reliable in the back row as I am in the front row” is the bar she’s set for herself this season, and the 6’1” senior is determined to live up to it.
While the routines look familiar, there’s a sharpened edge to this offseason. “Routine-wise everything is still similar to previous years,” Rutledge said, “but I definitely think we’ve been a little more intentional in our off-season practices.”
That intention is already paying off, especially when it comes to building trust between teammates. “Our communication and team chemistry has felt stronger,” she said. “Our team chemistry feels super strong this year and I think going into this season that could definitely be a huge benefit for us.”
The target ahead is crystal clear. “Making it to state is definitely the main goal,” Rutledge said. “To prepare, I try to think of the end goal and be intentional with each practice.”
Rutledge is the kind of player who adapts to whatever the game demands. “My main position is middle blocker, but it’s not unusual for me to be out of the middle,” she explained. “I fill in wherever is best depending on our opponent.”
Her strategic mind shines when she’s scanning the court. “I usually look for weaker players and holes in the court,” she said.
Preparation starts well before the whistle. “I make sure to prioritize sleep and nutritious eating,” she added.
Whether attacking or defending, her approach is focused. “Offensively, my mindset is typically: be aggressive, get a point,” she said. “Defensively, I try to be equally focused and relaxed.”
Rutledge’s drive to succeed is matched by her desire to uplift others. “I’d like to be remembered for being a good teammate and being an aggressive player,” she said.
And her favorite memory? It’s an easy one. “Winning our quarterfinal game to go to state my freshman year.” She also plays for the Ozark Juniors Volleyball Club and is committed to the University of Kansas.
