Webb City’s Abby Sargent – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Roderique Insurance

By Ken Hansard

Webb City High School sophomore point guard and student-athlete Abby Sargent spoke to VYPE SPORTS in a recent interview.

VYPE SPORTS: What are your personal goals for the year?

Sargent: I want to improve my shooting and my ability to finish around the rim.

VYPE SPORTS: What is your favorite memory about your association with this team?

Sargent: When we were at ORU for a basketball camp, our whole team crammed into the elevator.  We all took the same elevator so that we wouldn’t be late for breakfast, but then the elevator fell about a foot, and we had to crawl out of the elevator.

VYPE SPORTS: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

Sargent: Kirra Long was an amazing teammate. She always made me feel comfortable on the court – even when I was a freshman. No matter where she was on or off the court, she was always supportive for everyone. She was a great leader and an even better role model.

VYPE SPORTS: What is your favorite part of being a part of this team?

Sargent: My favorite part of this teammate is the camaraderie with all the girls. There’s no drama, everyone’s fun to be around, and it’s like having 20 sisters.

VYPE SPORTS: What clubs, community groups, or campus groups are you involved with and why?

Sargent: I help out in the children’s church on Sundays for New Beginnings Outreach.

VYPE SPORTS: What accolades (in any sport or non-athletic activity) are you most proud of?

Sargent: I’m most proud of being named All-District and All-Conference as a freshman for basketball. I’m also proud of being top three in my class for academics.

VYPE SPORTS: What has this sport taught you that you use in your daily life?

Sargent: This sport has shown me that basketball is not life.  No matter if you mess up or do amazing, you’re going to stop playing one day.  As long as I have a relationship with Jesus, I can play basketball worry free.

VYPE SPORTS: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?

Sargent: My mom always tells me, “Win or lose, if you give it your all, you can walk off the court with your head held high.”

VYPE SPORTS: Who inspires you and why?

Sargent: Jesus inspires me, because He gave me the opportunity to play and to give my best effort – and all I have to do is give all of the glory and credit back to Him.

VYPE SPORTS: Here is your chance to give a shout out or say thank you to anyone you wish.

Sargent: Thank you to my mom and dad.  They encourage me and support me have been my biggest fans ever since I started competing. Thank you to my sisters, Kylee and Brecklynn, who have always supported me and pushed me to be the best player I can be. Thank you to my brother Wyatt, who is constantly giving me advice about sports, basketball, and life in general. Thank you to Papa Mark, Nana Bonbon, Joe Edwards, and John Peak for being at every game that I can remember. And most importantly, I want to thank God for the opportunity to play the sport I love and for being a loving and forgiving Father.
