Jasper athlete Laney Cawyer spoke with Prep Sports to tell us about her life.
PREP SPORTS: What are your personal goals for the year?
My personal goals for this year are to reach 500 digs to finish off my senior year. I would love to improve my mental toughness, and to always play my best for my team.
PREP SPORTS: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?
The most fun I have had in this last year is winning with my teammates! My team has a very encouraging atmosphere about it and we all work hard every game so that we are able to keep our winning streak. Winning both the Lamar and Jasper tournament was a huge accomplishment.
PREP SPORTS: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?
My favorite teacher through out all the years I have been to school is Mrs. Holliday. She pushes me to be my best, and work hard on my school work. She is very helpful not only with the class she teaches but with other classes I am in, and just with life in general. Mrs. Holliday is very encouraging in school, sports, extra activities, and life. She always greets students with a smile, and I can tell she genuinely cares for each and every student at my school. Mrs. Holliday pushes me to be a better person, and I am truly thankful for her.
PREP SPORTS: What is your favorite athletic memory?
My favorite athletic memory was winning districts my junior year against college heights in three sets. They defeated us in the District Championship my sophomore year, so it felt very good to be able to be victorious against them when we met them again at Districts the next year.
PREP SPORTS: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
The teammate that has left the biggest impression on me is Crystal Smith. Crystal is incredibly athletic, and works so hard to continue to improve in all of the sports she plays. Crystal has a very strong mentality on and off the court. Crystal pushes me to be a better athlete, and try to dig up any ball I can so that way she can get a kill. Crystal isn’t only a great athlete, but she is a very kind person and always tries to make other people laugh. She is such a fun person to be around. I have enjoyed playing volleyball with her, as well as getting to know her more personally.
PREP SPORTS: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
My favorite part of being on this team is not only are we a team but we are a family. This team has brought me so many great memories. We all work hard each and every day together, and strive to bring out each others best qualities. We realize that even if it isn’t our best night that means another player may have their time to shine and we can cheer them on, because the next night may be our turn to shine. It has been so fun to see my team improve, not only in the last few years, but also just this season. I am incredibly grateful for my team, and will forever cherish the time I have had with them.
PREP SPORTS: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?
If I could pick anywhere to go on a summer vacation it would be Hawaii. I would choose to go with my family. I have been blessed to be raised in a loving home with amazing parents and three wonderful sisters. We are so close, and no matter what we are doing we always have a great time together.
PREP SPORTS: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?
If you gave me $500 and I had to spend it within 24 hours I would get a coffee and go shopping with my older sister and my mom. I love coffee and shopping, and it would be an amazing treat to spend the day with my mom and older sister.
PREP SPORTS: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?
I am involved with FCA. My faith in Christ is very important to me. I am very thankful for this club at our school where we can worship God and encourage one another.
PREP SPORTS: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?
I am involved with National Honors Society, and was rewarded with the Virtue of Character Award my Junior year. I am also involved with Student Council, and enjoy serving my school in that way.
